Battle of the Sexes (1960) UK Quad Poster
Without a doubt, it was films like this that made Charles Crichton [as well as The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953)], the only choice when John Cleese was looking for a creative partner for A Fish Called Wanda (1988). Crichton's timing and choreography of Peter Sellers' murder attempt is one of the highspots of British comedy. And with Sellers' decrepid, hidebound manager determined to resist attempts at modernisation at a tweed factory by a pushy American female, he created one of his finest sustained characters. The story is based on James Thurber's The Catbird Seat.
Artist - Harry Stevens (best known for his comedic London Transport posters in the 60s and 70s). Poster is signed Stevens 59. An alternative version of the poster omits Seller's kilt and socks, but this not only help to place the action of the film, but also add some vital colour to Stevens' design.
Condition: VERY GOOD / FINE - edge dinks, staining bottom right corner.
Cast: Peter Sellers, Robert Morely, Constance Cummings, Ernest Thesiger, Donald Pleasence, Patricia Hayes, with the voiceover by Sam Wanamaker
