Devils of Darkness was Britain's first modern day set vampire film (Hammer tried with I Am Legend in the early 60s, but were prohibited by the BBFC at script stage). It covers all bases, with a vampiric cult of Satan worshippers searching for likely victims, who are dragged back to their lair under a small Breton town's cemetery. William Sylvester squares up to Count Sinistre, oblivious that his actions decimate his own circle of friends.

Hubert Noël has fun as the count, accompanied by Carole Gray, lending her usual stolid presence to the proceedings. It was director Lance Comfort's final film, he died shortly after it was completed. A resolutely 'B' director, he made The Ugly Duckling for Hammer, and more interestingly Pit of Darkness (1961) in which a man tries to piece together a mystery with just snatches of memory, unable to trust anyone around him, prefiguring the staple giallo plot.

Aka: Orgie satanique
