
Marat/Sade (1967) UK Quad Poster #New
As the inmates of Charentron Asylum perform the Marquis de Sade's play in front of assembled dignitaries, depicting events from only a few years previously, the film creates a series of Chinese boxes. The actors play inmates who play historical personages on stage for actors in the audience. Under the RSC's director Peter Brook, Peter Weiss's play from 1963 manages to draw parallels with revolutionary France, 60's nuclear fear and present concerns about personal freedoms and the meaning of mental illness. The director of the asylum plans to use the performance to reinforce his own bourgeois ideals, but the inmates have other ideas...
