Walerian Borowczyk's erotic masterpiece was drawn from Stendhal's Promenades dans Rome (1829), and stunningly filmed by Luciano Tovoli, who'd shot Argento's Suspiria the previous year, and went on to film Tenebrae in 1982. Borowczyk, who started his film career making animated shorts, created a series of sumptuous, erotic classics throughout the seventies, such as Immoral Tales (1973), La Bête (1975) and Three Immoral Women (1979), which remain controversial due to their highly-charged depictions of sex and depravity.

After the madness of La Bête, Behind Convent Walls' plot follows a surprisingly conventional nunsploitation arc, with visiting firebrand priest uncovering deep-seated sinfulness, from sexual couplings to poisonings. It was during the making of this film that the role of muse passed from Borowczyk's wife Ligia Branice (he remained married to her until his death in 2006) to Marina Pierro, with whom he made six films, including Dr Jekyll and his Women (1981). It's Pierro who stares out of the poster.
