Armando Crispino’s The Dead are Alive is a slow burn giallo from the director of Autopsy (1975). The Etruscans seemed to hold a fascination for Italian filmmakers as the resident ancient bad-guys, with both The Scorpion with Two Tails (1982) and the infamous Burial Ground (1981) painting them in a murderous light. Two youngsters are murdered in an Etruscan tomb, that has recently been unearthed. Their corpses are ritually displayed, indicating they were sacrificed to the Etruscan Death God Tuchucha.

A fine effort for hardcore giallo fans, with red herrings, bloody deaths, distinctive characters and moody settings for a giallo. This film kicked off Samantha Eggar’s run of horrors, with A Name for Evil (1973), The Uncanny (1977), David Cronenberg’s The Brood (1979) and Curtains (1983).
