A Love in Germany (1983) US 1 Sheet Poster

Hanna Schygulla stars as the owner-wife of a grocers shop in mid WW2. She exercises a considerable power for the townspeople, but oversteps her position when she embarks on an affair with a Polish POW sent to work for her. Director Andrzej Wajda felt he'd misjudged the reality of life in small town Germany during the war, and he blamed that as the reason for it's failure in Germany (although it was nominated for the Best 1984 Foreign Film Oscar). 

Despite this, as always, Schygulla gives a masterclass in emotion - she's the Gena Rowlands of Germany, and everything she did, from Fassbinder's The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) even to the schlock of Delta Force (1986) and on to Faust (2011), continues to illuminate European cinema.
