Atomic Cafe (1982) UK Double Crown Poster #New
"When not close enough to be killed, the atomic bomb is one of the most beautiful sights in the world."
Shorn of any guiding voice over, The Atomic Cafe is structured to contrast and reveal the level of misinformation and propaganda that the U.S. government used to allay the very real fears of the American public, concerning nuclear weapons and the possibility of nuclear war. The school safety film 'Duck and Cover' reintroduced the term to a whole new generation, and producer-director Pierce Rafferty reckoned the ratio of viewed material to what ended up in the finished film was around 10,000 to 1.
Co-directed by Jayne Loader and Pierce's brother Kevin, who went on to mentor Michael Moore (and act as cinematographer) on Roger and Me (1989), as well as direct Blood in the Face (1991) and Who Wants to be President? (2000).
