The film author and screenwriter William Goldman couldn't discuss as 'lawsuits are still flying'. Goldman claims six directors worked on the shoot (originally Robert Altman was on board). It's officially down as a Dick Richards film, who made some great cinema - The Culpepper Cattle Co. (1972), Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins (1975), Farewell My Lovely (1975) and Death Valley (1982). He used a R.M. Richards semi-pseudonym, as under DGA rules he was deemed to have shot the major portion. 

Reynolds was at his punch-happy most obnoxious phase. He hit Richards, and was made to pay $500,000 in compensation. The story? Compulsive gambler Nick picks fights and loses to make weaklings look tough to their dates. His dream - to live in Venice, Italy. A former soldier of fortune, he's lethal with his hands and 'found' sharp objects. Mixing with the mob, it gets physical. If this sounds familiar, it may be because incredibly it was remade as Wild Card (2015), with Jason Statham.
