On rich red, a masked face reveals only the eyes behind. Below, same female figure lies stretched out in a white nightgown.

Based on Mascii's original French Grande artwork, the BFI rerelease poster is still a stunning piece, and Georges Franju's poetic and bloody Les Yeux Sans Visage was perfectly captured by Mascii in this and the Moyenne posters. In America, it was chopped down, released on a double bill with The Manster (1959) and retitled The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustus. Little wonder that it took some time for critical opinion to recognise the film's debt to Cocteau, and despite the graphic nature of the surgery, it is, at heart, a beautiful film.

With a screenplay by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac - responsible for Les Diaboliques (1955) and Vertigo (1958), flawless black and white cinematography by Eugen Schüfftan - Metropolis (1927) for Fritz Lang, L'Atlantide (1932), The Hustler (1961) and one of Maurice Jarre's most evocative scores (he also composed the music for Franju's 1963 Judex) the film works to create Franju's vision of "anguish... it's a quieter mood than horror... more internal, more penetrating".
