In the Nemo timeline, this film sits in between Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) and Harryhausen's Mysterious Island (1961). During the American Civil War, six passengers from a sinking ship are rescued by the Captain and his Nautilus. Nemo takes them to his underwater paradise, where they are anything but grateful, or appreciate anything of the beauty of the world he has created. It’s obviously a children’s film, and director James Hill (who was an animal expert with Born Free (1966) and Black Beauty (1971)) brings the film alive whenever people interact with animals, particularly during a shark attack sequence.
