Campsite Massacre / Hellcat Mud Wrestlers (Both 1983) UK Quad DB Poster #New
Campsite Massacre was directed by a young Andrew Davis, who went on to Code of Silence (1985) with Chuck Norris, was replaced on The Running Man (1986), then hit his stride with Steven Seagal's debut Above the Law (1988) and Under Siege (1992) which became one of that year's top grossing films. He followed that with his biggest hit The Fugitive (1993) with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. However, Campsite Massacre's pacing is far slower than these action epics, until a ferocious and well-staged backwoods climax puts it in Just Before Dawn (1981) territory. Although made in 1981 it couldn't find a distributor until 1983, at a point when several of the cast members had achieved fame elsewhere... (note the odd duplication of Rachel Ward's credit).
The "1983 World Mud Wrestling Tour" featuring Las Vegas based female mud-wrestlers, ends up immortalised by director David Sullivan himself, filming the event live in a tatty pub. He also supplied some additional models, who weren't booked for their wrestling skills. Amazingly, it was sharply edited by Jim Connock who briefly extricated himself from the world of sexploitation with Hannie Caulder (1971) and Digby: The Biggest Dog in the World (1973), before being dragged back for Exposé (1976), Hardcore (1977), Confessions from the David Galaxy Affair (1979), Paul Raymond's Erotica (1981), Slaughter High (1986) etc.
