Deathsport / Dynamite Women (1978 / 1976) UK Quad DB Poster #New

 A fantastic Claudia Jennings double bill. Recent USC graduate Nicholas Niciphor wrote and tried to direct Deathsport, but after having his nose broken by an irate David Carradine, he was replaced by Allan Arkush – Hollywood Boulevard (1976), Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979) and the box office failure Heartbeeps (1981) which put paid to Arkush's feature career. He later admitted there was no way to save Deathsport. A sequel of sorts to Death Race 2000 (1975) it was to form the middle of a trilogy, to be followed by Deathworld, which was never made due to Deathsport’s failure.

Dynamite Women has prison escapee Candy blast her way to freedom using dynamite, then she decides it’s a good way to rob banks too. With Ellie Jo, a sacked bank teller, she makes her way across Texas, getting rich and evading capture. It’s an early USA-set story about feisty, empowered women taking control of their lives without recourse to men, unless they want a little company. Claudia had genuine talent, but a spiral into booze and drugs ended in a fatal car crash, shortly after the release of Deathsport. Her best work was playing tough white trash, as in Swamp Bait (1973), Truck Stop Women, The Single Girls (both 1974), Sisters of Death (1976), Moonshine County Express (1977) and Fast Company (1979) for David Cronenberg.
