House of Secrets (1936 R40s) US 1 Sheet Poster

Regular price £65.00 £0.00

A budget 40's reissue that looks more dated than the original release poster. A nice connection is that the distributor, Alfred N Sack was the same man who gave Herschell Gordon Lewis a few thousand dollars to turn a short film into a feature. That was early nudie film The Adventures of Lucky Pierre (1961), which went into profit within four days of release, and the rest is exploitation history.

House of Secrets is an old dark house mystery (based on Sidney Horler's book and play, made as a silent in 1929), with an American discovering he's inherited a country pile, and afterwards suffering endless attempts to prevent him from living there. A couple of real Brits - Noel Madison and Holmes Herbert round out the US cast, and the film has a gloomy richness due to photography by M.A. Anderson - The Ghost Walks (1934), The Lady in Scarlet (1935). Occasional director Rowland D. Reed ended up as a producer in the early days of serial television, heading up all episodes of Rocky Jones, Space Ranger (1954).
