Blood Spattered Bride (1972) Spanish 1 Sheet Poster

During the repressive Franco era, the Spanish film industry was an endless intertwining of local talent, where directors such as Vicente Aranda, Carlos Saura and Victor Erice drew from the same pool of crew and actors. For example, for Bride, Aranda used Pablo G. del Amo as his editor (rather than his wife Teresa Font as usual). del Amo went on to cut A Candle for the Devil (1973), the political allegory Anna and the Wolves (1973) and Blood Wedding (1981) for Saura, and his finest work in Spirit of the Beehive (1973) for Erice.

Blood Spattered Bride saw Aranda continue the themes he explored in The Exquisite Cadaver (1969). A new husband, an unbelieving member of the Karnstein family, has his frigid bride stolen away from him by a lesbian vampire. Using Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla as a starting point, Aranda creates both a political and sexual allegory, steeped in a dreamy, erotic atmosphere. It was filmed by veteran cinematographer Fernando Arribas, whose international works included Death Walks on High Heels (1971), Open Season (1974) for Peter Collinson, The Violation of the Bitch (1978) and three other films for José Larraz and Cannibals in the Streets (1980) for Antonio Margheriti.
