Based partially on Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum, Count Regula (Christopher Lee) comes back to life, after being brutally executed for having murdered twelve virgins in order to use their blood to give him eternal life. Now he just needs number 13 to complete the ceremony…

The Germans begin to mine the Gothic vein with considerable success. (Dr.) Harald Reinl was an established ‘krimi’ Edgar Wallace Mysteries / Dr Mabuse director, who made his first out and out horror, the atmospheric The Strangler of Blackmoor Castle (1963) with Karin Dor. Cinematographer Ernst Kalinke gives Blood Demon a rich colour palette, melded with the expressionistic light and dark of the krimi films, and together both he and Dor made over 20 films for Reinl.
