Cabinet of Caligari (1962) US 1 Sheet Poster
Cabinet of Caligari is completely modern", said director Roger Kay during filming. "I don't want to sound presumptuous but I am trying to get the Pirandello approach that says nothing is what it appears to be.” If alarm bells hadn’t been ringing for Lippert already, they must have been after that pronouncement! Kay, the man who ruined Robert Bloch’s script with rewrites but still couldn’t get a screenplay credit, came from TV, and after Shootout at Big Sag (1962), a Pirandellian oater, returned there. Apparently a copy of Kay’s original, unsullied 'genius edit' is in the care of the Museum of Modern Art. According to Kay.
Glynis Johns seeks help at an estate after a car accident, and finds that her host, Caligari, will not let her leave. Torture, voyeurism and madness ensue – without spoilers there are several modern films treading the same thematic path, and it would be instructive to compare the similarities in execution.
