Legend of Blood Castle (1973 / 1975RR) US 1 Sheet Poster #New
Jorge Grau - Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue (1974) made this stylish version of the legend of Elizabeth Bathory, which takes a far more expansive approach than Hammer's Countess Dracula (1971). It was sumptuously filmed by Fernando Arribas, who shot The Blood Spattered Bride (1972), Open Season (1974), Violation of the Bitch (1978) for Larraz, Cannibal Apocalypse (1981) for Margheriti and Love Letters from a Nun (1978) for Grau.
Doyenne of Italian cinema Lucia Bosè gives the title role a perfect blend of haughty determination tempered with nervy indecision, as she is supported in her obsession by both her husband and witch-like maid. It's by far the most accomplished version of the tale, despite the lurid rerelease title here.
