Paul Mazursky's free-wheeling right-on comedy drama, riffing on Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels, where Donald Sutherland (taking on Joel McCrea's director in search of a meaningful Oh Brother Where Art Thou?-style film) has a word of mouth hit at the previews, and must decide on his next picture. As he probes possible scenarios - a Lenny Bruce biopic, or a Black Power uprising in LA - he fantasises about various scenes, juggles his family problems and meets Fellini and Jeanne Moreau in his rather aimless search.

A counter-culture classic, with Mazursky inhabiting his film with friends and family à la Cassavetes, it's irreverent and still wildly funny. And I'm not sure MGM ever let any other film desecrate their logo like this!
