At a specialist school for the deaf, one of the teachers and former pupil Sarah, now working as a janitor at the school, fall in love. She has never learnt to speak or read lips, and uses her wall of silence to isolate herself from a world she doesn't feel a part of.

 

Director Randa Haines (who was continuity on Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971) and went on from this to an episode for Tales From the Crypt (1990) is a trailblazer. Children happens to be the first film directed by a woman to be Oscar nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. That’s after 59 years of Oscar awards. Marlee Matlin as Sarah is the youngest ever winner of a Best Actress Oscar, as well as being  one of only four actresses to win for a debut film performance.
