During the Second World War, tens of thousands of blonde, blue-eyed Polish children were snatched from their parents and given to German families as part of Hitler’s Lebensborn – a plan to expand the Aryan master race within the Third Reich.

After the war is over, eight-year old Józef is repatriated and returned to his family, but his welcome home is strangely subdued. His mother struggles against her role as the widow of a war hero, and yearns to lead a normal life, his grandfather clings to Poland's past military glory, and Józef is more proficient in German than in Polish. He refuses to believe his father (missing since 1939) is dead.
