Coplan, Agent 005 / Anyone Can Kill Me (1964 / 1957) UK Quad DB Poster #New
Although Coplan, Agent 005 can be fairly accused of jumping on the 60's spy bandwagon, director Maurice Labro had made his first pre-Bond incarnation of Coplan in 1957 with Action Immédiate. Here it's sold on the presence of Virna Lisi, rather than the slight plot (a search for some top secret nuclear rocket fuel). The film's UK release was 1965, cheekily tying in with that year's successful How To Murder Your Wife with Jack Lemmon.
Anyone Can Kill Me has five thieves commit a perfect jewellery heist, then stash the loot and deliberately bungle a warehouse robbery. Thrown in jail for this low level crime, they wait out their perfect alibi. But one by one, they are found dead. A neat Agatha Christie-esque plot which wavers uncertainly between grim film noir and comedy, director Henri Decoin's finest work was back in the 1940s, with Les Amants Du Pont Saint-Jean (1947) starring Michel Simon.
