Arthur Penn directed this remake of My Name is Julia Ross (1945) – Nina Foch’s only starring role, under director Joseph H. Lewis, who is referenced here as the doctor’s character name. Mary Steenburgen takes on the role of a struggling actress who auditions to replace the previous lead on a film, who looks remarkably like her. But things are not what they seem…

Like You’ll Like My Mother (1972), the snowbound setting provides a perfect backdrop for the increasing suspense as the trapped heroine uncovers layer upon layer of deceit. Penn evokes a sense of chilling isolation and claustrophobia, handling moments of brutal, but fleeting violence with restraint, perfectly complemented by Richard Einhorn’s (Eyes of a Stranger, Rosemary’s Killer – both 1981) unsettling score.
