Directed and scored by the great John Carpenter, and written with his long-time producing partner Debra Hill (who did some second unit shooting), partly inspired by The Trollenberg Terror (1958) with its terror concealed within swirling clouds. Carpenter's first supernatural horror film, it tells of a ghostly crew of a deliberately wrecked ship taking revenge on the descendants of those responsible, 100 years later.

He was dissatisfied with the original shoot, and having seen the kind of harder gore and special effects scenes the film would be competing against, reshot and added scenes to match his rival. Some 30% of the film was a result of the reshoots, including John Houseman's opening ghost stories around the campfire, the morgue shock and Adrienne Barbeau's climactic escape from the ghosts.
