Snake dancing, nudity, salty period language, adultery and a Hyde who was sexually attractive rather than simply bestial, was simply too much for both the US Production Code and the BBFC, which demanded myriad cuts, shortening the rape of Jekyll's wife, the snake dancer's nudity and Hyde enjoying murder. A lot of fuss for what is now regarded as a too-tame retelling of the story from Hammer. Paul Massie is in the dual role, and Christopher Lee plays against type as a wastrel, leeching off Jekyll while carrying on an affair with his wife.

Although Hammer's official US partner on the film was Columbia Pictures, they licensed it to AIP, who changed the title pre-release to Jekyll's Inferno, but in order to ride the wave created by their House of Usher, had it hastily changed (after printing as Jekyll's Inferno) with a House of Fright snipe.
