Writer Jacinto Molina Álvarez was persuaded by the German backers to save the film when Lon Chaney Jr. bowed out at the last minute. Jacinto selected the stage name of Paul Naschy, and true Spanish horror cinema was born. He went on to play his werewolf character another fifteen times (a few of these appearances not strictly 'canon'), as well as writing / directing / starring in many other seminal Spanish horrors, El Gran Amore de Conde Dracula, The Hunchback of the Morgue, Horror Rises from the Tomb (all 1972), La Maldicion de la Bestia (1975), Inquisicion (1976), El Aullido del Diablo (1987) and La Noche del Ejecutor (1992).
