Based on the 1959 science fiction novel by John Lymington, it was adapted twice - first a 1960 television version directed by Cyril Coke (who went on to the Mystery and Imagination series in 1968), then this more familiar version with Lee, Cushing and Patrick Allen. At the height of a bitter winter, the island of Fara swelters under an inexplicable heat wave, and something deadly is burning animals and people to a crisp...

Released in America as Island of the Burning Damned on a 1971 double bill with Godzilla's Revenge (All Monsters Attack - 1969), the distributors Maron Films understandably confused the film with Island of Terror (1966). Director Terence Fisher fails to successfully juggle the high melodrama of the beleaguered survivors in the pub and some exciting action sequences towards the climax, but the film looks stunning with excellent colour photography from Reginald Wyer, whose black and white work on Night of the Eagle (1962) is equally inspired. He worked with Fisher four times between 1950 and this, his last film.
