Shot on a tiny budget of £65,000 (it went over budget by £30,000) this was the film that put Roman Polanski on the English speaking cinematic map. It depicts a descent into schizophrenia as a young, isolated woman hallucinates and resorts to murder to push away the claustrophobic horrors surrounding her. Catherine Deneuve is perfect as the icy, fragile blonde, reacting to some of the best dream shocks in cinema. And all the while, the sound design with bells, piano practice, clocks and the cracking of the walls pervades her nightmares.

British Lion and Paramount both passed on the film, and it became Compton Films' (aka Tony Tenser and Michael Klinger) entry into wide-release films. They stayed with Polanski for Cul-de-Sac (1966), at which point Tenser left to form Tigon Films.
