Under pressure from new studio Universal, this was Wes Craven's answer to the success of his own Freddy Krueger franchise for Warners. But ill-advised forays into black humour (given the real-life serial killer structure) fall flat, as the murderer survives his electrocution and becomes pure electricity himself, able to travel and kill again with ease. The disparate plot elements rarely gel, but there are still plenty of classic Craven moments, and his Nightmare on Elm Street cinematographer Jacques Haitkin (Galaxy of Terror 1981), give the film a dream-like gloss.
