Witchfinder General (1968) UK Quad Poster #New
Michael Reeves' final, ferocious period horror film, much reviled by the press on release, and due to the tensions between director and star, produced one of Vincent Price's finest performances. Other than a few pick-up shots (Hammer's favourite Black Park was used), it's an East Anglian film through and through. Self-styled witch hunter Matthew Hopkins travels from village to village extracting false confessions and overseeing the inevitable executions. A young roundhead and his intended bride are tortured by Hopkins - it ends in bloody retribution.
Witchfinder General was very popular in Germany, and inspired several like-minded films - Mark of the Devil, The Bloody Judge (both 1970) and Mark of the Devil II (1973).
